There are several essential oils that have proved to be effective in removing lice. Some people are allergic to some essential oils, though, so put a small drop on the back of your child’s hand to see if they have an allergic reaction to it before you apply it to their hair and scalp. If they are allergic, move on to the next oil on the list below. Essential oil treatment can be instrumental in getting rid of lice.
They are listed from the most effective to the least essential oil treatment effectiveness:
tea tree oil
lavender oil
neem oil
clove oil
eucalyptus oil
aniseed oil
cinnamon leaf oil
red thyme oil
peppermint oil
nutmeg oil
Mix 2 ounces of olive oil with 15 to 20 drops of whichever essential oil you choose. Use cotton balls to apply the mixture to your child’s scalp and hair and leave it in overnight using a shower cap to minimize the mess.
In the morning, comb out your child’s hair using the nit comb. Then shampoo, rinse, and repeat. Once the lice are gone, you can use the essential oil spray as a preventative treatment. Just mix 4 oz of rubbing alcohol with 15-20 drops of essential oil in a spray bottle. Use this to saturate the hair and leave it in for 12 hours.
Essential oil treatment can not only be used to get rid of lice, but also to prevent lice from appearing in the first place.
